Iowa Teen Award 2011-2012

  • Nora Raleigh Baskin. Anything but Typical
Jason lives in a world where he is anything but typical. Jason has autism and tries to make sense of the world that the “neurotypicals,” those without autism, live in. He is curious about the need for people to be together and interact. Through his writing, we get a glimpse into his world as well.
  • Ann Burg. All the Broken Pieces
Matt Pin was airlifted from Vietnam in 1975 and adopted by a loving family in the United States. Through free verse poetry, we learn about the horrors that Matt experienced in Vietnam during the war and the losses he endured. A series of events force Matt to come to grips with these memories.
  • Sarah Dessen. Along for the Ride
Auden never learned to ride a bike. She was too busy studying. However, the summer before college, she goes to live with her dad, his new wife, and their new baby. Here she begins to realize that perhaps there is more to life than studying.
  • Alex Flinn. Beastly
Kyle Kingsbury is rich, tall, blond, perfect…and a spoiled teenager that takes pleasure in breaking young girls’ hearts. Now a witch has turned him into a beast, his father has sent him away, and Kyle has one year to find someone to fall in love with him or he will stay this way forever.
  • Sara Lewis Holmes. Operation Yes
Miss Loupe, the new sixth grade teacher, has taught her class improvisation and to say “Yes and…” to continue telling a story. But when Miss Loupe’s brother gets hurt in Afghanistan, she can’t seem to say “Yes” anymore. Drastic action is required.
  • Andrew Klavan. The Last Thing I Remember
One day Charlie wakes up strapped to a chair, overhearing men talking about killing him. His last memory is of working on a paper, chatting on his computer, and watching a video. It is now a year later and Charlie must find a way to escape and fill in the blanks.
  • Gordon Korman. Pop
Marcus moves to town in the middle of summer and spends his time working on his skills before football tryouts. Charlie Popovich, retired NFL linebacker known as “the King of Pop,” befriends him. Marcus is amazed that Charlie is willing to help him out, but Charlie’s unpredictable behavior has Marcus worried.

After becoming the batboy for the Detroit Tigers, other parts of Brian’s life are not so great. His mom and dad are divorced and his dad, a former major league player, lives in Japan. Brian is looking for a relationship with his father and hopes that his job as a batboy will bring them closer.

After moving across the country, sisters Callie and Savvy realize how much they rely on their athletic passions—basketball and cheerleading. However, when steroids are found in Savvy’s gym bag, the girls must look at the price of performing at the highest level.
  • Patricia McCormick. Purple Heart
When Private Matt Duffy wakes up in a military hospital in Iraq, he knows something bad has happened because his head hurts like crazy, but he can’t remember what happened. As pieces of his memory start to return, Matt struggles to make sense of it all.
  • Walter Dean Myers. Sunrise Over Fallujah
Eighteen-year-old Robin Perry joins the Army shortly after 9/11 and is deployed to Iraq. His Civil Affairs Unit is supposed to be winning over the Iraqi people and securing the country, but as the war escalates, so does his military role. Robin begins to experience the horrors of war as Operation Iraqi Freedom unfolds.

Samuel and his parents live on the frontier of western Pennsylvania right before the start of the American Revolution. Samuel has taught himself to be a good tracker, which comes in handy when his parents are captured by a group of redcoats. He is determined to find them, even if it means walking all the way to New York City.
  • Laura Resau. Red Glass
Sophie’s family takes in a sixyear old orphan, Pablo. When Pablo confides in Sophie the name of his village, they set off on an adventure that will change Sophie’s worldview. Accompanied by great-aunt Dika, her boyfriend, and his son, Angel, Sophie hopes that all members of their group choose to return to the United States at the end of their travels.
  • Neal Shusterman. Unwind
The “Bill of Life” states that children between the ages of 13 and 18 can be “unwound,” with all their organs and body parts being transplanted into someone else. When Connor learns that he is to be unwound, he runs for his life, joining a group of other “unwinds” just trying to survive.
  • Jordan Sonnenblick. After Ever After
Jeffrey managed to survive leukemia, but the treatment left his brain damaged so he can no longer do math. Now he must pass a big math test before he’ll be allowed to attend high school. However, he’s not even sure he can survive eighth grade.
